kuttichAthan – Karinkutti chAthan / vishNumAya chAthan

KuttichAthAn or chAthan is the name of the gaNa – a group name for the particular form of mUrtis; like how we are all generally called manushyAs.. So, we cannot carry a more localized opinion that chAthan is the negative spirit like how we cannot call every human bad. Our Hinduism is greater than the Earth along with its solar system. There are a lot to learn and even after learning a lot, still there will remain a lot to learn.. vEda vyAsar is one example through whom swAmy taught us “known is a drop and unknown is an ocean..”
Let’s see who this chAthan swAmy is!!
chAthan swAmy is no different from the gaNapati, subrahmaNyar or aiyappa. He is also a shiva putra.. His parents are kirAta shiva and tvarita pArvati. Like how kailAsha is the abode of shivA, svAnandalOka is the abode of gaNapati, pazhani is the abode of skanda, shabarimala is the abode of aiyappa; he has the hill Kalladikode as his abode. chAthan means karinkutti chAthan only.
Then, who is vishNu mAya chAthan? Karinkutti chAthan only is vishNumAya chAthan.
shrI vishNumAya chAthan is the sAttvika swarUpa of Karinkutti chAthan.. Karinkutti chAthan carries the tAmasa swarUpam. Based on their swarUpam, their guNa (character) varies and so, their rituals are!!
Then, who is kuttichAthan?
Actually chAthan is the clan’s name as said earlier. Kutti is the prefix given to them out of fondness by the tribe who has initiated the worship of chAthan in this bhU maNDala.
agni kuttichathan, poo kuttichathan, idan kuttichathan, valan kuttichathan, perum kuttichathan, veera kuttichathan kind of various chAthan mUrties are there with the word “kutti” attached to it. Infact, there is a chAthan mUrti who is called “kutti-kutti-kutti-kutti!”.. One cannot interpret the tribal vidyAs with the mere distant intelligence about it.
vishNumAya chAthan may appear with two hands holding the bhasma sanji (a bowl) and mantra vati. The same vishNumAya chAthan also appears with two hands holding the kuruvadi. And, in his other form he has 16 hands and in which he carries 18 weapons. And, this last form has to be worshipped in the cross roads to get his darshana. Still he is seen a sAttvIka swarUpa only. These Gods falls under the mAntrIka vidyA and so, their gentleness itself will be unbearable to many. And, he carries the swarUpa of the bAlaka.
Karimkutti chAthan also appears with two hands holding the bhasma sanji and Golden mantra vati.. And, he has a swarUpa of the big man with big moustache, beard with red piercing eyes similar to karavIra pushpam. He always remain intoxicated with the alcohol.
vishNumAya chAthan has 16 kuttichAthans in his immediate counsel and the Karimkutti chAthan has 18 kuttichAthans in his immediate counsel. Considering the internet gurujis, we are avoiding from listing the names of those 16 & 18 kuttichAthans.
There are hundreds & hundreds of kuttichAthans; though the number is restricted with 390.
And, out of hundreds & hundreds of kuttichAthans, none knows which kuttichAthan carries what type of character. There is a mUrti called kuttichAthan itself in this clan and he needs to be worshipped with the alcohol & dried fish only. And, such mUrties are restricted for the commoners and also for the good practitioners to not go near-by.
Pleasing shrI vishNumAya chAthan or Karinkutti chAthan and receiving their grace will earn the grace of every single kuttichAthan mUrti and so, instead of getting into the risky waters, it is good to remain at shore in the doorsteps of this shiva putra. And, he helps his devotees only for the sat-kArya; means he will help people only for the justice.
His devotion can’t be played with. It is usually like either one must go through the karmAs or has to give the karmAs in the form of money to parihAra pUjAs or helping the deserving needy or has to dissolve the karmAs by doing a lot of abhishEka to swAmy or has to burn the karmAs by doing a lot of japAs.
Always a two-way policy only – give & take, unlike the mindset of present spiritually elated people like, I don’t give anything, but I want everything. If it is ONLY give or ONLY take, then the world can no longer exist. Either it remains a dump yard or a barren desert!
Here, this swAmy will take your karmAs and bless you in return. That is why like tirupati perumAl, to this chAthan also, one must pray like – “You please bless me with this (a genuine need) and I will give you this in return”. And, this promise shall not be taken easily like how we deceive people..
Like how tirupati perumAl teach a lesson for such tongue tipped devotion, the same way, he will also teach such people. Based on what these two Gods are, the way of teaching differs!!
The promise to tirupati perumAl has to be fulfilled immediately after kArya phalida. Else, we have the habit of keeping a one rupee coin in the turmeric anointed cloth as the symbolic offering and we will do the real offering as early as possible.. Likewise, the promise made to chAthan to get your wish fulfilled has to be offered within 28 days from the date of kArya phalida. If genuinely you cannot fulfil it within that days, one shall get the time of another 28 days time. But, no Gods shall be handled in a way a normal man can be handled with the deceiving thought behind the mind..
The vAhana of chAthAn swAmy is a normal water buffalo only.
His pUjA is called as sEvA. sEvA means service.. So, the way we serve him with pure mind, pure body and proper vidyA matters a lot..
The Rituals: chAthan sEvA & Its Significance
Worshipping chAthan requires dedication, sincerity, and a clear intention. The ritual, called sEvA, is not just about offerings; it’s about service—a pure-hearted commitment to giving something in return for divine blessings. This is a two-way relationship:
- Offerings: Spiritual offerings are made in the form of prayers, pUjAs, abhishEkAs, vishEsha nivEdana and mantrAs.
- karmA and Grace: For chAthan to bless you by negative the karmA that stops from getting you achieve that you wish for , the promise you make to give something in return must be fulfilled genuinely. This can be done through rituals, charity, or selfless service to chAthan. For example, if you wish to seek his grace for a specific need, you must promise to fulfill your end of the commitment — whether that’s performing an act of kindness by doing chAthan sEvA / guruti pUjA, doing charity to any chAthan swAmy temple. The time limit for fulfilling the vow is 28 days from the date of the blessing.
Always one has to either go through the karmAs or has to offer the karmAs like this or has to dissolve the karmAs by performing a lot of abhishEka to any swAmy or has to burn the karmAs by involving in severe japAs.
