Kanchana Pitham

In our previous post, we have seen the dashavidha yama – 10 types of moral code of conduct for a man to walk towards spirituality, as after all, spirituality begins with the spiritual discipline. These are all getting lost in the modern spiritual training programs and without it, the experiences the man feels out of his accumulated thoughts from various sources / programs be like getting the fruit out of air.

Though patanjali maharishi has already guided us with the ashTANga yOga, datta bhagavAn has added few more principles to this ashTANga yOga for the people who is struggling in kali kAla for achieving the spiritual endeavours.

In this post, let’s see the dashavidha niyama – 10 types of observance a man or woman must be determined towards achieving it.

  1. tapas – Penance – an atonement for the sins. So, penance comes through voluntary suffering under the able guidance. Worshipping swAmy or ambA by stepping out of our comfort zones with the strong determination to give swAmy the message “however it is hard, I won’t leave you and I will make sure, you will come to me!”. This tapas is the foremost need for one to achieve spirituality. This tapas is what that gives tEjas to the man or woman. And, this tapas is what that gives the atma balam to the man or woman. And, this tapas begins from silence. More the talks, less the strength to undergo tapas.
  2. santOsha – Contentment or Satisfaction.. This has never said, a man or woman must leave all the material desires. Rather it says us to remain satisfied with what we have today and for the “near” future. The one who is in spiritual pursuits must not remain greedy towards accumulating material wealth by putting all other things behind this concept of wealth accumulation. Else, he will lose his balance and will either remain struck in his spiritual journey or may even pushed back to point 1 in his spiritual journey.
  3. Astikyam – The strong belief in God.. Faith is the key to AtmIka and when we lose faith during the turbulences of life which is unavoidable in everyone’s life, then he won’t be saved by the hands of swAmy.. But, for sure he will get rescued by the hands of kali purush to ensure he will never get back to swAmy. Here, as his heart is closed for swAmy, never he returns back to the same heart. A man must understand even the creatures like dog won’t look back if you close your heart for it and swAmy won’t look at such person for many births. Unfortunately we believe, swAmy will come for the donations we make or the shlOkAs we chant. When there is no Guru bhakti, daiva bhakti attains hIna.. And, when daiva bhakti attains hIna, immediately kali purush will catch hold of such people.
  4. dAna – Giving away for charity.. The more and more one does dAna, all his dush karmAs will get cleansed. But, if a man or woman thinks of owning a place or person through the act of dAna, he acquires a massive sin as he is abusing the most purest form of dharma – dAna. dAna is not an investment of money to think of returns of money in future. Rather, dAna is an act of investing good deeds without self-centric mind to reap the anugraha of dharma dEvata for his generations or generations after generations based on the dAna that one makes. If the dAna becomes the act of monetary investment, one earns the wrath of dharma dEvata..
  5. Ishwara pUjana – Nitya pUjAs.. Here Ishwara is not just shiva, the form of any ambA or swAmy who governs you, take care of you, compassionate towards you and accessible to you. One mustn’t forget this karuNA of swAmy and must always remain indebted to it. He must not hold onto pUjA when he wants & must not discard the worship after the wants are done with. A man must never forget the gratitude and should always carry the respect towards the one who helped them, as Ishwara may act through anyone. Ishwara pUjana not only signifies chanting mantrAs & throwing some flowers towards the idol.. Ishwara pUjana is respecting people who helped you & remaining with gratitude towards them. Leaving this attitude and worshipping swAmy even with pUjAs worth lakhs of rupees are of no value.
  6. siddhAnta shravaNa – One must “listen” to siddhAnta from the learnt person. So, one must come out of the illusionary mind that if I read the books of siddhAnta, I shall become a siddhAntin, kind of. This is the reason, wherever we turn, we see The Guru and infact, Gurus are there in every home now.
  7. hrI: – A deep sense of modesty & humility.. A man carrying modesty & humility, according to what he is helps him not to get derailed from the path of dharma. This in turn protects him from engaging in the illegitimate actions.
  8. mati – Intellect.. A must for a man to woman to pursue both material & spiritual path. No mantrAs or any sort of upadEshAs are forbidden to offer to the people who lacks the intellect. Why? will you give a job or any responsibility to a fool?.. So, a man must carry high intellectual mind to grasp the upadEshAs that are offered. Dull mind won’t be welcomed anywhere. Some people may shine with intelligence in material affairs & may hold a lot of money, people & power.. But if they are dull towards earning the spiritual merits, they are to be ignored as simple as that. Like how the material path ignores the man who is dull towards material possessions, but rich in spiritual knowledge.
  9. japa – Prayers.. Like how a bathe is necessary to keep our body clean to avoid diseases, prayers are essential to keep the mind & spirit clean. As like how one’s body gets dirtier day-in & day-out and demands bathing, the same way, the mind gets dirtier with too much of involvement in the material affairs. So, like a daily bathing, daily prayers are utmost necessary..
  10. vrata – A Spiritual observance.. For the man in samsara, as often he must take a vrata and must ensure, his personal commitment towards spiritual gains always remain in line with him. This is the way to strengthen one’s devotion & his commitment towards spirituality. Without vrata, the spiritual practices are like offering the ghee in the wet wood where there is no fire.

mantrOpadEshAs or siddhAnta upadEshAs shall be given ONLY to people who carry at least a little of these traits, as these upadEshAs are nothing but to fuel these yama, niyamAdi ashTANga yOga. No fire without the spark. And, it is the spark under the able guidance turns to be the fire and becomes the light for one’s self & also to others through him.
