Patala Bhairava

Patala Bhairava

Patala Bhairava is one of the most secretive and fearsome forms of Bhairava, revered in the mantrika sampradaya. Unlike the well-known depictions of Bhairava as guardian of the eight directions, Patala Bhairava belongs to the hidden path — the protector of the subterranean worlds and the master of night-born forces.

The Terrific Form

Patala Bhairava is envisioned as a dark-skinned tribal god, with a wild jatamudi, protruding teeth, and eyes round with fury. His ornaments are made of bone, his waist is tied only with a thin rope, and he wears black vastra. In his right hand, he wields a danda (staff), and in his left, a sharp tribal knife. Anklets adorn his feet, and his whole form radiates an aura of  attakasa bhava.

The Origin

Patala Bhairava is said to be born out of a dead star, a cosmic remnant that no longer radiates life but still burns with hidden energy. Hence, his darshana is like that of a star — distant, fierce, and filled with unearthly brilliance. This connection ties him to the realms of the unseen, the patala loka, and the occult energies that thrive in darkness.

The Sadhana

Patala Bhairava is invoked by sadhakas who walk the path of tantra and mantrika vidya, seeking not only karya phalida (success in endeavors) but also subjugation of external enemies and protection from hidden dangers.

  • His worship is SURELY not for the uninitiated and not to be advised even for the initiated as this vidya is a pearl that lies deep inside the bhairava vidya.

  • It must be performed only in the midnight hour, when silence and darkness align with his fierce presence.

  • Those who approach him with sincerity and discipline find in him a terrific ally and guardian. Here your enemy becomes his enemy and if anyone troubles you, he will answer them.

The Power of Patala Bhairava

Unlike the popular forms of Bhairava worshipped in temples, Patala Bhairava belongs to the esoteric circle of worship, where only the brave dare to enter. He does not grant boons easily. His presence is a test of courage and authenticity.

But once he accepts the sadhaka, he grants mastery over enemies, protection in unseen battles, and success in karmic endeavors.
