Mahalaya Pitr Paksha Puja 2026 – Daily Tila Tarpana, Bali Dana & Yama Dharmaraja Puja

27 September – 10 October 2026

Every blessing in your life begins from your ancestors.

Mahalaya Pitr Paksha is not merely a period for remembering our departed family members.

It is the sacred period in which a person consciously fulfils their Pitru Rna — the ancestral obligation — through offerings, remembrance and worship of the Pitru Devatas.

At Kanchana Pitham, the Mahalaya Pitr Paksha observance is performed throughout the complete period with a dedicated sankalpa for the ancestors of each participant.

This is a complete ancestral worship programme, consisting of daily Tila Tarpana, daily Bali Dana, daily worship of Yama Dharmaraja and Chitragupta, and a concluding day on which all these observances are performed together with Tila Homa.

Why Should We Worship Our Ancestors?

Before we received this body, this name, this family and this life, there was a lineage of people who came before us.

Our parents came from their parents.

Their parents came from those before them.

Generation after generation, the lineage continued until it reached us.

The Pitru tradition therefore teaches that human life carries an ancestral debt — Pitru Rna.

This does not mean that we should live in fear of our ancestors.

It means that we should not forget them.

Just as we show gratitude towards our parents while they are alive, the traditional dharma provides methods by which we continue to honour those who have departed.

Pitru Puja will remain as a remedy for many unresolved issues.

What Is Performed Every Day?

From 27 September to 10 October 2026, the following observances are performed with the sankalpa of the participating devotees and their ancestors.

1. Yama Dharmaraja Puja

2. Chitragupta Puja

3. Tila Tarpana

4. Bali Dana

What Happens on the Final Day?

On the concluding day, the complete observance is performed once again along with the Tila Homa.

What If You Do Not Know the Names of Your Ancestors?

Do not worry.

Many people know only the names of their parents or grandparents. Some may not know the names of ancestors from earlier generations at all.

The available ancestral details can be provided during registration, and the sankalpa will be prepared accordingly.

Provide whatever information you know accurately.
